Proper Storage Techniques for Your Oral Hygiene Supplies

Your toothbrush is an important tool in your arsenal against tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health issues. However, in order to do its job effectively, it must be properly cared for. Here are a few tips on how to store and care for your toothbrush so that it continues to help you in the battle against bacteria.

Location, Location, Location
Placement of your toothbrush counts. Too close to the toilet, and it could be sprayed with germs every time you flush. Too close to the sink, and it could be splashed with soap or dirty water when you wash your hands.

Place your toothbrush as far away from the toilet and sink as possible while still within reach. You may consider a wall mounted holder if space is limited, but just be sure to keep it above the sink and far from the toilet.

Air Dry
After each use, thoroughly rinse your toothbrush to remove anything that might be lingering within the bristles. Then, store it upright to air dry. Do not store in a closed container. Doing so slows drying, and provides the optimal environment for bacteria to grow.

You could store your toothbrush in a cabinet if there is sufficient airflow, but you should make sure to clean the cabinet regularly. Ideally, it should be stored out in the open. And if you have more than one toothbrush stored in the same location, make sure the bristles don't touch to avoid cross contamination.

Clean the Toothbrush Holder

No matter where you store your toothbrush, make sure to clean it on a regular basis. Otherwise, the buildup of dust, bacteria and germs can contaminate your toothbrush and cause illness.

Depending on where you store your container, you could wipe it down with an antibacterial wipe or toss the container in the dishwasher with the rest of your dishes.

Storing your toothbrush properly is essential for making sure it performs its job as it should. Contact our office about more ways to keep your toothbrush in fighting form at your next appointment.
