Why Berries Are Good for Your Natural Teeth but Not Whitened Ones

added on: April 25, 2021

Nicholas Dose, DMD Family DentistryThere are so many berries out there, and they all taste so good it is unfortunate that some are bad for your teeth. Well, not necessarily bad for your teeth, but bad for the whitening aspect of your teeth. But there are good berries and bad berries, and it helps for you to know the difference. Keep in mind that no one is suggesting that you shouldn’t eat berries at all. After all, they have many health benefits, and most are full of antioxidants. This is just a heads up that if you are going to eat berries, make sure you take precautions so that you can enjoy the berries without sacrificing the whiteness of your teeth.

What Berries Do to Your Teeth

Who knows what malic acid is? Malic acid is a substance found in certain fruits that can help to whiten your teeth by removing surface stains on them. Malic acid is found in strawberries and other fruits such as apples. It is frequently found as an ingredient in over-the-counter tooth whitening agents. Strawberries also contain Vitamin C which helps remove plaque, thus acting as a teeth whitener in that capacity.

But berries come in different varieties, and not all berries are created the same, nor do they all have the same effect on your teeth. Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries are the worst offenders. These berries all have very deep colors, and their coloring is also a significant staining agent. Though they can be eaten always ensure that you rinse your mouth thoroughly after you are finished to get the staining agent from sitting on your teeth. Though they are known for staining your natural teeth, they are worse for teeth you have had whitened.
