Who Tend to Be the Best Candidates for Veneers?

added on: April 25, 2021

Nicholas Dose, DMD Family DentistryPatients who suffer from a variety of cosmetic issues can greatly benefit from veneers, but not everyone is a good candidate for the relatively easy procedure.

If you want that beautiful, perfect smile, this can be a great option for you. There are several considerations your cosmetic dentist will evaluate. So, who tend to be the best candidates for veneers?

What are Veneers?

First, let us tell you what they are. A veneer is a porcelain material that is placed over the teeth to cover up imperfections such as stains, crookedness, or gaps.

Veneers can be removed in some cases, but if we needed to remove a moderate amount of enamel, which is often the case, the veneer would need to be replaced. You cannot have it permanently removed.

Healthy Teeth

If you practice good oral health and have good habits at home, but don’t have perfect teeth, then you can be a good candidate for veneers. For patients with gum disease, gingivitis or other oral conditions, veneers are probably not a good choice.

Grinding or Clenching

Patients who grind or clench their teeth are not good candidates for veneers because they aren’t as strong as your natural teeth and the pressure from clenching or grinding can cause them to crack or chip.

Tooth Enamel

People who have lost all of most of their enamel should not get veneers. Veneers are attached to the enamel, which needs to be strong in order for them to bond permanently.

If you don’t have perfect teeth, but practice good oral health, and don’t suffer from any serious underlying oral conditions and want that smile you have always dreamed about, ask your dentist about getting veneers. They can also make your smile whiter and they only require a couple of visits.
