![]() It's identifiable because as soon as the sugar is no longer in contact with your tooth, you'll no longer experience any pain. Unfortunately, many people are experiencing this today because their diet is full of foods that contain sugar instead of healthier choices like vegetables. Why Sugar Causes Sensitive TeethAlthough sugar is satisfying and delicious, it can also wear away your enamel. This is because they contain a lot of carbohydrates that interact with your mouth's bacteria where they form an acid. This acid can cause enamel erosion, which is what makes your teeth sensitive. The likelihood of this happening will increase when you repeatedly expose your teeth to sugar. Eventually this can also lead to tooth decay. Treating Teeth That are Sensitive to SugarEating a healthy diet that isn't packed full of sugar and acid is always beneficial, as is brushing your teeth twice a day (making sure to use floss and mouthwash appropriately while doing so). However, once your tooth becomes sensitive to sugar you'll want us to look at it right away.We can determine if the sensitivity is due to decay, in which case we may need to fill your tooth. Sometimes the sensitivity is caused by a broken tooth, filling, or crown. When this happens, you may need to have a root canal. There are also times when the sweet sensitivity occurs because your tooth's enamel or dentin has become exposed. This is the most easily treatable type of sweet tooth sensitivity because you'll simply need to use a toothpaste that's specially designed for sensitive teeth (e.g. Sensodyne, Fluoridex, Colgate Sensitive). |
