Oral Hygiene
Lake Oswego, OR

Couple brushing their teeth after visiting Nicholas Dose, DMD in Lake Oswego, OROral hygiene begins before birth, in development, and is continually maintained throughout your life. At Nicholas Dose, DMD, we feel that it is vital to our patients to educate them, and provide tips and hints on their oral health and how to care for their teeth. Dr. Dose and our staff are happy to answer your questions and want to maintain a regular relationship with our patients. By continuing to see the same dental staff in regular intervals, we are able to be of more value to you. We can see changes as they occur and note problem areas that are out of the ordinary. We value our patients.

Daily Oral Hygiene

Though both steps taken at home and in our office are important, if the patient ignores daily oral hygiene, their oral health is in trouble. We ask that patients daily:
•  Brush: Brushing your teeth is the most basic, and yet important step in oral health. You brush your teeth to remove food particles, plaque, and rid your mouth of sugar. We ask that patients turn their toothbrush at an angle toward their gum line when brushing, you want to be sure to remove any plaque along the gum line. You also want to brush the front, back, and around each tooth to the best of your ability.
•  Floss: Flossing is an important step that is often ignored. Flossing is done to remove food and plaque located between your teeth. Tips for flossing include creating a c-shape when flossing, not just moving the thread in an up and down motion. We also recommend getting flossing sticks for younger patients, handing them to them while they watch tv, guarantees that they will put them in their mouths, and floss. Food and plaque left between the teeth will lead to decay and cavities.
•  Rinsing: Following brushing and flossing, rinsing is a great way to keep infection at bay. Rinsing kills bacteria and gives a clean wash following flossing. There is a large variety of rinses available in various flavors, including some that will not induce a stinging sensation.
•  Fluoride Toothpaste: In the early 20th century, scientists began to notice the correlation between fluoride and strong teeth. The outer layer of our teeth is enamel, which is the hardest material in our body, harder than bone. If you were to look at enamel under a microscope you would see that it is comprised of a mass of shards all pushed together, and while we chew, these shards break off, known as demineralization. We can mineralize our teeth with fluoride, meaning we help rebuild the enamel.

Dental Office Hygiene

About twice a year, we want to see our patients for in office oral hygiene appointments. This allows us to review your oral health, clean areas that are missed, and make sure that you are on a good path in your oral health. We provide:
•  Dental Cleaning: Our professional hygienist will clean your teeth and remove hardened calculus and tartar. At your cleaning appointment, we will measure your gum pockets and evaluate the potential of gingivitis or gum disease.
•  Dental Exam: At least once a year, Dr. Dose will evaluate your dental health. We will review digital x-rays, looking for hidden problems, and evaluate your overall oral health including a visual examination for an oral cancer screening. Maintaining a frequent office relationship with Dr. Dose will help us note problem areas and see changes happen, helping us help you.
