Parents of young children naturally want to know how they can ensure their child's health and well-being inside and out. Healthy teeth go a long way to help grow a healthy child. If you want to ensure complete dental health for your child, encourage healthy brushing, flossing and mouth washing habits, schedule consistent visits to our office for checkups and cleanings and consider applying dental sealants.
Sealants are thin, plastic films which we paint on to the side of teeth used for chewing. These sealants are effective in protecting teeth from cavities. The sealant guards teeth against bacteria and food particles that attack the enamel. Sealants can last up to five years before they wear down and require replacement. Should you choose to leave your child's teeth unsealed after these five years are up to you. Clinical studies prove that previously sealed teeth are no more susceptible to tooth decay than the average, unsealed tooth.
What to Expect
Sealants are easy to apply. In fact, it only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth. When you visit Dr. Dose, he will first clean the teeth you plan to seal. Sometimes he uses a dental drill to examine the grooves in the molars, simply to ensure no decay is already present. Then he will use an acid solution to score the teeth; this allows the sealant to stick to the teeth. He will then paint the sealant on the tooth! The sealant will bond to the enamel and harden, quickly and painlessly. Your child will not feel a difference and you can rest assured they are protected from cavities and tooth decay.
Why Use Sealants?
Molars are far more susceptible to cavities and tooth decay than any other tooth. The grooves common in molars act as traps for food and bacteria. Even the diligent brusher and flosser cannot reach these grooves all the time. Children are especially in danger of missing these spots as they learn to properly care for their teeth themselves. If these areas continue to go on without proper brushing, flossing or rinsing, the food left there will encourage bacteria to multiply, spread and possibly cause tooth decay. Tooth decay could cause your child unnecessary pain. At our family dental care clinic, we offer cost-effective sealants solutions for you and your family. While you should still continue to brush, floss and rinse, sealants can help your child to avoid cavities and tooth decay for many years to come.
When Can My Child Get Sealants?
Children are more likely to suffer from cavities and tooth decay as the depressions in their premolars and molars are deeper and harder to reach. While adults without any decay or fillings could also benefit from sealants, children and teens get the most use out of them. As soon as your child's teeth come in, they are ready for sealants. Most children become cavity prone between the ages six and fourteen years old.
