What is a Maryland Bonded Bridge?
Tooth loss is very common for most Americans. Nearly half of us are missing at least one of our permanent, adult teeth, making the need for an attractive and reliable dental restoration greater than ever. However, not everyone is going to be a good candidate for a traditional dental bridge, which is why we introduce Maryland bonded bridges to our patients.
While a traditional bridge normally consists of one or more pontics (the restoration, or the prosthetic tooth) supported by two crowns on each side of it, a Maryland bonded bridge is somewhat different. Also called resin-bonded bridges, Maryland bridges do not use crowns at all. Instead, they use two “wings” to support the pontic. These wings are attached to the back of the supporting teeth using bonding material.
When is a Maryland Bonded Bridge Ideal?
Not all patients are good candidates for a traditional dental bridge, which is why a Maryland bonded bridge can be a good treatment option for some individuals. Because they do not require a crown, they are a much more moderate and conservative restoration option. They are a good choice for younger patients, especially those who may be considering more intensive restoration options later on (such as dental implants).
Maryland bonded bridges are not recommended for your back teeth. This is because there is a greater amount of pressure placed on the back teeth, which could endanger your bridge and put it at risk of being displaced. However, for visible front teeth, they look and feel just like a real tooth, restoring both the function and appearance of your smile.
Taking Care of your Maryland Bonded Bridge
While Maryland bonded bridges can be durable and long-lasting, we do advise that you take extra caution with them. For instance, avoid biting directly into hard foods (such as carrots or apples) with your bridge. Do not crunch ice with your bridge, either, as that can increase the risk of failure.
You will want to take care of your Maryland bonded bridge just like you would take care of your natural teeth. Continue to practice good oral hygiene, making sure you brush your teeth twice per day and floss them daily. If you take good care of your bridge, you can expect it to last you up to ten years or longer before you may need to replace it.
In the past, both patients and dentists have shied away from Maryland bonded bridges in favor of traditional bridges. Today’s Maryland bonded bridges are stronger and appear more natural than those of the past, making it a great option for many patients.
