Adults are busy. We understand that. We frequently have patients skip one, two, or even more dental cleanings, but skipping these appointments leave you open to potential larger issues. At Family Dental Care in Lake Oswego, Dr. Dose and his team, want to see you twice a year for a dental cleaning.
Why are dental cleanings beneficial?
The main benefit to a dental cleaning is removing harmful bacteria. We accumulate bacteria throughout our day from normal use. Brushing and flossing alone can miss the nooks and crannies of our teeth. This is what our dental hygienist is trained to find.
First, we will clear away any plaque that has built up around your teeth. Plaque is that sticky film that you may feel on your teeth, it is a blend of saliva and food debris, and it often includes sugar which is found frequently in the foods we eat. This plaque is filled with bacteria that is chomping down on this sugary substance and as it does that, the bacteria decays our teeth.
As plaque rests on your teeth and along your gums it begins to dry and then harden. This hardened material is called Tartar or Calculus. Tartar is dangerous for your teeth and gums. The bacteria that is thriving in this material can dip below the surface of your gums causing an infection to begin, known as gum disease.
What are the larger issues from skipping cleaning appointments?
Missing cleaning appointments allows potential issues to go unnoticed. Even the best “brushers” can miss the build up of plaque and tartar. This bacteria filled material leads to decay, gum disease and cavities which then leads to the need for larger restorations or even tooth loss.
Our first concern is your health, but there is an aesthetic reason for a dental cleaning too. Following the removal of harmful bacteria, we finish up with a rotary brush and a gritty paste, removing stains, whitening your teeth, and help your smile look its best.
Don’t miss your dental cleanings, they are designed for your benefit. So please call us today to learn more on why dental cleanings are so important.
